Abstract
Humanity has needs and challenges that, in order to be solved, require the participation of diverse organisms, including animals. In particular, the participation of animals in research projects is regulated and legislated in most countries; however, the use of insects in this sense still requires attention. In this work, the use of insects as food was reviewed, as well as their participation in research projects, describing the concept of sentience, and discussing whether invertebrates have it. Likewise, a concrete case study was presented, in which black soldier fly larvae are used and ethical principles and their relevance in this topic were reviewed. It is concluded that more studies are needed to confirm whether insects feel or reason. In addition, it is also necessary to regulate their death so that it is dignified, and to give them the respect and care that their management requires.
