Resumen

A nivel mundial, el crecimiento poblacional ha impactado directamente en el incremento en las demandas de alimentos, combustibles, materias primas, y algunos otros productos químicos. Bajo este contexto, la satisfacción de las necesidades actuales sin comprometer los recursos disponibles para futuras generaciones, se ha convertido en un tema de suma relevancia; en la última década las comunidades científicas, gubernamentales y tecnológicas han enfocado sus esfuerzos en ello. En ese sentido, la conversión de biomasas mediante esquemas de biorefinerías permite aprovecharlas en su totalidad para generar productos de valor agregado, biocombustibles, así como bioenergía. Sin embargo, dada la gran variedad de productos que pueden generarse en una biorefinería, su síntesis no es una tarea trivial. Así, la optimización matemática resulta ser una herramienta poderosa que puede emplearse para realizar dicha tarea. Por ello, en este artículo se presenta información sobre los modelos matemáticos, así como las biorefinerías, en aras de mostrar como ambas estrategias pueden hacer sinergia en la implementación de procesos sustentables, rumbo a una economía circular.
