Abstract

For Mexican people, a house is not only home, but also a personal and family life project that represents a long term effort. The analysis of housing in this article refers to that produced in one of the most vulnerable sectors of Mexico, due to its economic limitations to access dignified and formal housing: affordable housing. This housing solution is common to most of the Mexican population, a situation that urges the search for an alternative. It has been concluded that essential aspects that determine the habitability of the houses have been repeatedly overlooked in housing produced massively for this sector. Habitability is a key concept in this analysis; since it has been observed that there is a lack of consistency between what those who produce it think it means and what it actually is. Among other factors, the emergence of self-build housing seems to be the answer to the current needs of people of this sector, as it responds better to the actual needs of Mexican people.
