Creative mathematics: Introductory activity to the concept of elipse

Abstract

The current mathematics curriculum demands to plan activities that develop student’s key competencies, useful in their training as individuals and required in helping to accomplish collective goals. In this work an artistic and mathematical activity is reported to introduce the concept of ellipse in Analytical Geometry class from the Bachilleres school at UAQ. The activity is based on the competence approach and the philosophy of realistic mathematics proposal by Freudenthal.
