Abstract

Automatic writing, a phenomenon in which words flow without the conscious mediation of the author, has fascinated writers, artists, and scientists since its origins. However, beyond its fascination, it raises profound questions about the nature of creativity, copyright, and the relationship between the human and the technological. From its roots in spiritism, to its adoption by the Surrealists, through its evolution in the 20th-century avant-garde movements, and its transformation in the era of generative artificial intelligence, automatic writing has been a bridge between the human and the supernatural, the unconscious, randomness, or computer science. This essay explores how automatic writing has challenged traditional notions of creativity and authorship, analyzing its manifestations in different historical and cultural contexts, and reflecting on its implications in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
