Abstract

To meet the food demand of the population, it is necessary to increase food production. Food of animal origin is the most demanded, but requires certain inputs, mainly a source of protein. Conventionally, fishmeal and soy protein are the most commonly used; however, the production of these sources is associated with economic and environmental problems. For this reason, lower cost and environmental impact alternatives have been proposed. The black soldier fly larva is a viable option due to its nutritional composition. This organism has the capacity to feed on different organic wastes, but it has been reported that the variation in its diet influences its development. In general, the substrates used for feeding it are characterized by a variation in their composition, which has made it possible to evaluate the effect of feeding on larval growth as a function of the proximal composition of the diet. However, there is little information on the effect of nutrient sources on the culture of this organism. For this reason, it was proposed to evaluate the variation of the dietary protein source. For this purpose, different protein sources were selected to elaborate diets of similar composition (same crude protein concentration). Subsequently, larval culture was carried out and productive variables were evaluated as response variables.
