The spiritualist Dr. Mendíbil and the history of a religious dissent in Colombia´s XIX century

Abstract

This article has as main objective to show part of the spiritualism history in Colombia during the second half of XIX Century, this to demonstrate, in first place, that spiritualism was practiced by some kind of intellectual, political and cultural elite linked to radical liberalism; and in the second place, to show there was a conflict, very unknown by colombian historiography between spiritualism and Catholic Church, in a period of time in wich civil wars were one way to solve dichotomy between political liberalism and conservadurism, all this using the history of the persecution to Calvo Mendivil M.D in Sogamoso in 1869 because of his spiritualist beliefs
