Abstract

A fundamental node of discussion in the historiographical narration of art in Asia is the very idea of (the) Asia/s, which has become a geo-aesthetic conceptualization in which Asia / East Asia / Japan become interchangeable concepts. This article outlines a reading of the Japanese proposal for the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale entitled "Cosmo - eggs", from the perspective of the question of whether it is possible to affirm that the idea of Asia constitutes the signifying anchor for the national pavilion of Japan. The aim is to problematize the appropriation or resemantization of Asianness as an underlying discursive strategy in the Japanese curatorial project.
