Proteo, by Francisco Monteverde: power, caudillismo and otherness

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to revise, from the otherness, the work of Monteverde, Proteo (1983), because it is a crossroads in many ways: it is an agreement between the formal quest that takes the European theater as a model, in which the Contemporaries make incursion into, and also the Bustillo Oro and Magdaleno’s theater. We also do it because it represents the efforts of the Comedia mexicana group, that has in the number of authors involved -Monteverde among them- a representativity still waiting for a second check, after the quick way in which many of these plays were rejected by the most nationalist trends of that time.
Keywords: European theater; Bustillo Oro; Mexican comedy.
