Abstract
An important aspect of recent narratology is the relationship that semiotics has with the different aspects of the development of a plot in film and television. Nonethless, a neglected component of this relationship is the one that refers to the presence of vexillological symbols (flags and heraldry), the use of which has been important for the development of narrative structure and elocution. This article explores the facets and functions that the vexillological factor has as an integral part of a plot, with the aim of studying its semiotic behavior within the cinematographic narrative. Concepts related to semiotics are assumed and lines of research of interest for the study of audiovisual narrative are established. It is concluded that the narrative interest in the use of vexilological elements enriches the plot and contributes to enhance the aesthetic and media success of an audiovisual work.
