Abstract

Studies focused on children and adolescents on COVID-19 are fewer compared to those studying the entire general population, due to a few amount of data available and the difficulty for detecting this disease. The aim of this paper is to provide a descriptive analysis of the impact of this disease on Mexican infants. Methods: A statistical analysis of COVID-19 cases in children under 18 years old was performed using official information from the Secretaría de Salud de México updated to July 31, 2022. Risk factors associated with infant mortality were analyzed using a linear model. Results: 6.52% of COVID-19 cases in Mexico correspond to children between 0 and 17 years of age, and 1,335 deaths have been registered to date. The highest incidence of infection and deaths occurred in 17-year-old adolescents and children under one year old, respectively, with males being the most affected. This study ratifies that comorbidity increase the chances of death. Conclusions: Child population is the least at risk for COVID-19, however, they are not free from serious risks due to this disease, so this sector of the population should be studied continually.
