Abstract
Tick control is a fundamental activity in bovine production. Currently, ticks have developed resistance to different ixodicides, causing large losses in livestock production, environmental contamination, and health effects on those who apply these products. For this reason, it is important to explore alternatives such as the use of natural extracts to control this mite. The objective of this work was to evaluate the acaricidal effect of the plant commonly named “vaporub” extract (Plectranthus sp) to control of ticks Rhipicephalus microplus. The extract of the plant was obtained with a rotary evaporator. Subsequently, the extract was evaluated by an in vitro larval pack test (LPT) for 24 hrs. Treatments with the following extract concentrations were evaluated: T1; 0.05%, T2; 0.50% and T3; 5.00 %, and the control (trichlorethylene and olive oil in a 2:1 ratio). From 4.30 kg of fresh plant matter, 38 mL of Plectranthus extract were obtained, which represented a yield of 0.97%. The T3 treatment showed the highest percentage of larval mortality (9.64% ± 0.88), however, no significant differences were found between the treatments (P ≤ 0.05). Based on the results obtained, to achieve a higher mortality rate, it is proposed to evaluate the extract in higher concentrations, evaluate different stages of the tick and a longer exposure time to the extract.
