Abstract

Water Quality Monitoring Systems (WQMS) are systems focused on monitoring multiple water parameters in order to verify its quality and validate if its use is suitable for a specific purpose. Due to the fact that in Mexico there have been situations related to the massive death of fish, which could have been prevented if a constant water monitoring had been implemented, this work presents the main characteristics, types, advantages and disadvantages of the WQMS.  The objective of this work is to define the main requirements for implementing a WQMS based-on Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), through a review of the literature. These represent an adequate solution to the current problem in Mexico, due to its low cost (compared to systems based on a network of sensors) and large census area (compared to traditional systems). Also, the document introduces some problems and other important aspects encountered in the documents from literature review. At the end, a proposal for a USV for water quality monitoring is presented.
