Resumen
Existe un creciente interés por los retos asociados a las estructuras de las comunidades microbianas del suelo que fungen en la estabilidad de los agroecosistemas y aumentan la producción de cultivos para satisfacer la alta demanda de alimentos y energía en la agricultura moderna. En la actualidad, los principales avances en la metagenómica del suelo y el patrón espacial de las comunidades microbianas y las características moleculares a nivel de comunidad pueden explotarse como indicadores "biomarcadores" de los procesos del ecosistema para el monitoreo y la gestión de la salud sostenible del suelo. Esta revisión describe las estrategias teóricas y metodológicas pasadas, presentes y en curso, empleadas para evaluar y comprender mejor la distribución y evolución de bacterias, hongos, nematodos y arqueas con el objetivo de promover prácticas agrícolas que utilicen dicha diversidad para el correcto funcionamiento de la biología del suelo y, más ampliamente, de los servicios del ecosistema.
