Resumen

La producción de alimentos en sistemas de traspatio es uno de los principales proveedores de alimentos para la población humana y tiene un impacto importante en el estatus socioeconómico de las familias rurales y urbanas. Además, la producción de traspatio también es una opción viable para obtener alimentos frescos y orgánicos, que pueden aportar nutrientes de alto valor para la salud humana. Uno de los mayores problemas de la producción de alimentos es la falta de tecnologías nuevas e innovadoras, que a su vez permitan tener un impacto positivo al medio ambiente. Conjuntamente, la población mundial necesita adoptar una forma de alimentación más sostenible y centrarse en métodos que permitan una producción de alimentos constante. Por lo tanto, este artículo presenta una alternativa ecológica de métodos de producción de alimentos con la implementación de sistemas acuapónicos en la agricultura de traspatio, que puede mejorar el uso del agua y combina los métodos de producción de animales acuáticos y plantas en un solo sistema. La agricultura de traspatio tiene un alto impacto en la disponibilidad global de alimentos y también en la capacidad de preservar el patrimonio cultural de la producción de alimentos, reduciendo el impacto ecológico y la oportunidad de implementar nuevas tecnologías al optimizar la tasa de uso del agua para producir alimentos en paisajes más secos. Asimismo, la producción de alimentos en sistemas acuapónicos es viable para su implementación en áreas rurales con falta de suelo fértil o en áreas urbanas con espacios reducidos como parte complementaria de un concepto de jardinería urbana. Se concluye que el uso de la acuaponía puede ser un método sostenible de producción de alimentos, pero es necesario realizar estudios futuros sobre el impacto socioeconómico que podría tener en las zonas rurales si se emplea en un concepto de producción de traspatio.
