Abstract
The objective of this text is, first of all, a general and brief review of aproaches, theories, functions and benefits of humor and laughter in health and life. Secondly, the theory of relief proposed by Freud is focused, which is perhaps the most extensive and accepted, which combines positive functions and satisfactory benefits. It is deepened on it, through the literature and some empirical case studies, in order to describe and explain this perspective, as well as present and analyze how it is perceived, lived and valued by the population. The latter is done through research findings with university students, through surveys, focus groups and interviews conducted between 2010 and 2018. Apparently humor and laughter are appreciated for their component of emotions considered positive such as joy, however, its role of relief and destress is also underlined in a more than remarkable way.
