Abstract

Prostitution has been called the oldest profession in the world, with the first official records dating back to 2400 b.c. It has gone through moral criticism, personal trials, institutional rejections, penalties, fines and even deaths. Even so, few agreements have been reached regarding this practice. In the 21st century, reactionary postures are in the midst of a heated dispute, and Russia represents a formidable setting for the study of this phenomenon. Russian women have resorted to prostitution for centuries, they have faced government regulations, but above all the disregard and silence of the authorities. These courtesans have been part of an economically active group, representing financial support for their families and for themselves. While the president president decides to make jokes about them, the law enforcers decide to stop them, persecute them and abandon them in the silence of relegation.
