Abstract
The political participation of citizens can occur in two ways: conventionally,
which is one in which the mechanisms of participation are institutionalized, or
unconventional forms that do not correspond to the norms, laws and customs.
This research seeks to understand the participation mechanisms exercised by
citizens of the metropolitan area of Monterrey, in Nuevo León, Mexico. A
quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional methodology was chosen and
information was collected through a questionnaire that was applied to 414 citizens. Among the results, it was observed that voting was the conventional
participation mechanism exercised with the greatest impact in society, while in
non-conventional political participation, collaboration in an organization or civil
association was the mechanism with the most mention.
