Abstract

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) are stressful situations that occur before the age of 18, these are highly prevalent in our environment and are associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes in physical health, life opportunities, education, social behavior and mental health in the short, medium and long term. Due to the immaturity of several physiological systems, children exposed to ACE may suffer traumatic toxic stress and its consequences, which could be transmitted transgenerationally by epigenetic mechanisms that are not fully understood. There are different population groups that have been economically or socially marginalized and are at greater risk of suffering from ACE, for which different public health policies have been proposed to prevent or reduce children exposure to Childhood trauma. This article reviews Childhood adversity, toxic stress, ACE in disproportionately affected populations and strategies for prevention.
