Neopopulism and Quality of Democracy

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of populism as a phenomena in relation with the quality of democracy, based on the idea of it as a multivariable and complex condition that arises within democratic systems and redefines their dynamics, presenting them with a multi-faceted challenge. The article focuses especially on analyzing the way in wich populism affects (and can affect) two of the democratic qualitie’s procedural dimensions, participation and competition (with the other dimensions of democratic quality as a backdrop), and the various ways in wich populist influence can result in the subversión of democratic quality rather than its deepening.
